It's known that men have nipples. But it can be surprising to notice similar small bumps on your male dog's belly and groin area.
Since most pet owners don't typically inspect their dog's underside closely, many may not be aware that male dogs also possess nipples.
Do Male Dogs Have Nipples?
Yes! Male dogs do have nipples. These tiny bumps can be found from their groin area up to their stomach. The number of nipples can vary, with most dogs having around 8 to 10 although some may have more or fewer.
What Do Male Dogs’ Nipples Look Like?
General Appearance of Dog Nipples
Both male and female dogs have looking nipples. While a nursing mother may have prominent nipples compared to a female without puppies or a male dog generally speaking nipples are small round bumps that run from your dog's sheath up his abdomen. Nipples can be pigmented or match your dog's skin color—both variations are considered normal.
Visibility of Nipples in Long-Haired Dogs
If you own a dog with long fur, the nipples may not be as visible and might only be seen when the fur is moved aside. Nipples are more noticeable on dogs with short coats.
Checking for Abnormalities in Dog Nipples
If you notice a nipple that appears larger than the others, is releasing fluid, or seems unusual in any way, it's advisable to seek advice from your veterinarian.
Why Do Male Dogs Have Nipples?
Male and female animals develop similarly in the womb and both genders end up with nipples. This common trait among mammals is likely a result of factors.
Nipples are essentially the default feature for mammals during development. While they may not have a function in males they don't cause issues.
In essence, there was no pressure to get rid of nipples in males. Like how male dogs without nipples didn't gain any advantage over those with them so there was no selection against them. This is akin to the presence of bones, in whales. Even though whales no longer have legs these structures persist as they don't pose any problems.
Is It a Nipple or a Tick?
Finding a bump while giving your dog a belly rub can be worrisome especially if you live in an area with lots of ticks. Your first thought might be "Is that a tick? I should remove it!"
But what seems like a tick could actually be a nipple, skin tag or growth. Tugging on these can cause pain and bleeding. It's crucial to confirm it's a tick before trying to get rid of it.
To distinguish between a nipple and a tick check for legs—ticks have them nipples don't. Also examine the base of the bump; if its smoothly connected to the skin it's likely a nipple or growth;. If one end looks buried it's probably a tick. Comparing the bump, to your dogs nipples can also provide insight; if they resemble each other chances are it's just another nipple.
If you're unsure seek advice from your vet on telling ticks from nipples.. Remember to keep your dog protected with reliable flea and tick prevention measures.
Do Nipples Ever Cause Problems for Male Dogs?
While mammary gland tumors are more prevalent in female dogs they can also occur in male dogs. Male dogs can have nipples that are typically harmless although they may sometimes pose issues.
If you observe a lump under your dog's nipple or notice any unusual changes it's advisable to seek advice from your vet. There are instances where what seems like a nipple could be a type of growth like a tumor. Some skin tumors, such as skin tags are benign while others could be cancerous.
If you have any concerns that a nipple might indicate something serious it's wise to schedule an appointment, with your veterinarian.
